Bird Control

UK Bird Control has a versatile and creative approach to dealing with problems caused by birds.
Where seagulls, pigeons, starlings and sparrows flock in large numbers they can present a high health risk to humans which is often preventable in a cost effective manner. Our effective approach to any problem involves research into the individual needs of our customers and the birds involved. The solution will be tailor made, safe, humane, reliable and comes with a guarantee.
All of our technicians are qualified and have successfully obtained the BPCA Bird Management certificate, the Advanced Diploma in Pest Management and passed Network credited courses in 'UK Urban Bird Control', 'Surveyors' and the 'Safe and Effective Use of Air Guns for Urban Bird Control'. We have also attended and been awarded a certificate in IOSH (Insitution of Occupational Safety and Health) Working Safely in Bird Control. We hold the RSPH (Royal Society for the Protection of Health) Level 2 in Pest Control and are registered with the PPTRS (Adv) (Professional Pest Technician Registration Scheme Advanced) scheme.
UK Bird Control fully complies with the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, The Environmental Protection Act 1990, The Work at Height Regulations 2005 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
We are experienced in using mobile elevated working platforms and hold the IPAF Powered Access Licence to use all models of cherry pickers, self propelled and lorry mounted booms and scissor lifts and we only hire from reputable companies. All technicians have been trained and certified to use Hilti Cartridge Tools (DXA-41, DX450, DX460, TE6-A). All technicians are PASMA trained for safe erection of tower scaffolding.

We also hold the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Personal Track Safety licence (CTRL-PTS) 2008.

Our bird prevention methods are routinely used in domestic situations. Common settings include seagulls nesting on roofs and pigeons in balcony areas of flats. Please see our Methods for Control and Prevention for further details on methods that can be used.
Installation Costs
Our prices depend upon the size and number of the areas to be protected, the access and safety requirements to get to the problem area(s), the amount of guano to be cleaned up and your property’s location.
Our prices start from as little as £250.00 + VAT for minor spot protection (for example, a single easily accessible chimneystack requiring spikes).
An average domestic solution costs in the region of £500.00 - £1000.00 + VAT to install. Buildings with flat roofs are generally more costly than this to proof successfully. The price for proofing flat roofs varies dependent on surface area of the roof, its condition and accessibility. Please call us for more details.
You may wish to join forces with your neighbour in tackling a joint bird problem in order to provide a more cost effective solution.
For help and advice on which solutions meet your needs call us on 0845 226 3642. We will survey your property and provide a free, no obligation, quotation recommending a tailor-made solution to control your bird problem.

UPDATED 2011
In the UK the principal piece of legislation protecting birds is the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 and its subsequent amendments. The governing body is the Department of the Environment Food & Rural Affairs, DEFRA. In the act it states, “all wild birds, their nest and their eggs are protected by law”.
However, there are currently twelve exempt species including Herring Gulls, Greater Black Backed Gulls, Lesser Black Backed Gulls, Feral Pigeons and Feral Doves, all of which are recognised by DEFRA as a nuisance pest. These birds may be controlled by humane methods under a DEFRA general licence. It is highly likely that your pest gulls or pigeons are in one of the above-mentioned categories. One of our professionally trained site surveyors will be able to easily identify what species you have on your property.
Wildlife & Countryside Act exempt pest species under a DEFRA general licence
Common name & Scientific name
Crow Corvus corone
Dove, Collared Streptopelia decaocto
Gull, Great Black-backed Larus marinus
Gull, Lesser Black-backed Larus fuscus
Gull, Herring Larus argentatus*
Jackdaw Corvus monedula
Jay Garrulus glandarius
Magpie Pica pica
Pigeon, Feral Columba livia
Rook Corvus frugilegus
Woodpigeon Columba palumbus
Canada Goose Branta Canadensis
* Removal of nests and eggs only
For more information on general licences follow this link to DEFRA’s website:
http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countryside/vertebrates/gen-licence.htm
Causing suffering to the gulls is illegal. Only the occupier or owner of a building can take action to control herring gulls. If you own or occupy a building, you can employ UK Bird Control under a DEFRA general licence to take action against Herring Gulls, Greater Black Backed Gulls and Lesser Black Backed Gulls on your behalf. It is our company policy to employ only non-lethal means against gulls.
Feral Pigeons are a common pest and whilst not protected by law must still be treated humanely when being controlled under the DEFRA governance. Causing them harm or prolonged suffering is illegal and again the removal of pigeons needs to be professionally undertaken by trained individuals under a DEFRA general licence.

Some of our specialist services include:
Seagull management
A service for removing gulls from industrial & commercial roofs, where netting is prohibited.
We visit 5 times a year during the breeding season to remove nests and eggs under a DEFRA general licence, preventing further population growth, blockage to gutters and aggressive behaviour. Adult gulls are forced to establish themselves elsewhere.
Prices start from £50 + VAT per visit and depend upon the size of the roof, its location / accessibility and the level of bird pressure on site. Contact us to discuss your specific needs.
Feral pigeon management
In extreme cases where numbers are out of control and conventional methods of bird-proofing have failed, or public health is at risk, we can provide licensed bird control services.
This service requires the satisfaction of certain criteria laid out under the DEFRA open licence. All of our staff are trained in the effective us of air weapons for this purpose.
Please note that this method is strictly controlled and only permitted for feral pigeons, not seagulls. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.
Restricted access proofing
We are experienced in using mobile elevated working platforms and hold the IPAF Powered Access Licence to use all models of cherry pickers, self propelled and lorry mounted booms and scissor lifts and we only hire from reputable companies.
We regularly use these systems to reduce the cost of accessing high or hard to reach problems by not having to use costly and time-consuming scaffolding. In addition, if it is necessary to use scaffolding all technicians are PASMA trained for safe erection of tower scaffolding.
Dead bird and guano removal
Our trained and experienced technicians are able to handle any size clearance of guano fouling or dead bird accumulation. With the use of our specialist equipment and comprehensive personal protective equipment we can handle all aspects of a guano and/or carcass removal service from initial asessment to the waste transfer.
Guano removal is a specialist task that should only be undertakewn by experienced personnel with the correct equipment. There is a high risk of disease transfer to humans from dry or untreated guano.
Commercial installation prices
Our commercial pricing structure is dependant upon the size, complexity and location of the site to be proofed. One of our expert surveyors will be able to help you budget for your site accordingly. For a free, no obligation, consultation and site survey please call us on 0845 226 3642.
